ATTENTION ALL INCOMING 7th AND 8th GRADE STUDENTS & FAMILIES
California law requires that all students entering 7th through 12th grades need
proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster shot (Tdap) before starting school.
Students not providing proof of receiving a Tdap (tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis) booster shot will be excluded from starting school on August 21st and will not be able to come to school until they provide documentation of vaccination. (The plain tetanus-diphtheria booster shot, Td, does not protect against pertussis and will not meet the requirement.
If your healthcare provider is having difficulty accommodating your child, please have the provider contact Dr. Scott Morrow MD, MPH, San Mateo County Health Officer, at (650) 573-2519.
Whooping cough (pertussis) has been widespread in California. Many students have had to miss school because they were sick. The Tdap immunization is important to protect the health of your child and others in the community.
Skateboard riding is not allowed on our school campus, in our parking lot, or on the District Office parking lot at 101 Lincoln Ave. If your child rides a skateboard, they should wear a helmet and protective pads. Please remind your child of these rules.
Remember that we do not have general supervision for students before 8:00 a.m. or after 3:10 p.m.
Earn Spirit Points Through Recycling
Students are encouraged to continue to bring ink cartridges and cell phones so that they may earn enough spirit points to attend the end-of-the-year field trip. If you have accumulated 500 spirit points, you will be invited to participate in the field trip. Unfortunately, Fernando Rivera is not collecting any more bottles and cans this year for spirit points.
Here are other ways to collect spirit points:
1. Participate in spirit days.
2. Turn in Newsletter Tear-offs monthly.
3. Turn in coke bottle caps and the cardboard soda comes in.
4. Turn in ink cartridges, cell phones, and laptops.
5. Go to dances.
6. Donate books to the library
7. Helping teachers-spirit contract
8. Get "caught being good"
Students are placed on the non-participation list for receiving poor grades (two or more F's) in academics, citizenship, or exhibiting poor behavior. Students who continue to be placed on the list or those who do not do well when report cards are issued will be excluded from our next dance in February and from participating in the Annual March Marathon.
Please monitor your child's assignments through the Binder Reminder. Our goal is that NO students will be on the next Non-Participation List. With your help, we can do it! If you'd like some advice on helping your child improve on their grades, please call Ms. Evangelista at (650) 991-1225.
Fernando Rivera PTSA Needs You!
Volunteers are needed for the following upcoming activities:
October 18th-First Dance 3-4:45 p.m.
October 31st-Haunted House
The major areas that are reviewed to determine a student's status are:
1. Grade Point Average/GPA (This is shown at the bottom of a report card.)
2. Attendance (Tardiness lowers your grade and every time you are absent the school loses money.)
3. Performance on District/ State Assessments in Reading, Writing, and Math
It is very important that parents monitor their child's progress during the school year concerning these areas. The GPA and attendance for the full year will be considered. The testing will be conducted in the spring of the school year.
For more information, please visit the Student Handbook Section III, Promotion Information
Student's Success Begins with Attendance
The state has changed the way schools are funded. We do not receive funding for excused absences any more. Also, remember that every day missed puts a child more than 2 days behind in his/her class work and homework.
Please be certain that your child stays home when it's absolutely necessary. Attendance is essential! Make sure your child is at school everyday.
If your child is unable to be at school, please call our absence hotline at (650) 746-2556 to report his/her absence.
