Spring Pictures
Friday, March 5 is Spring Picture day. Spring Pictures are different than the Fall pictures. All students will have their picture taken, receive a picture packet and have the opportunity to keep and pay for the pictures or return them. There will be free dress for Spring Pictures so the children may wear something nice for the picture. No spaghetti straps or tube tops allowed. If the student is not dressed appropriately the parents will be called.
STAR Testing
STAR testing begins on April 19 for students in grades 2-5 and continues for 4 weeks. Please try to avoid planning trips or activities during that time. More to follow...
Kindergarten Registration
We are continuing to register students for Kindergarten for the Fall. If you have a child or have neighbors with children who were born on or before December 2, 2005 it is time to register them for school. Please call (650) 991-1239 if you have any questions.
Third Grade Showcase Performances
You are invited to the Third Grade Showcase on Thursday, March 11th. There will be a performance at 9:00AM and 2:00PM. Parents are invited to the 2:00PM performance but may attend the earlier show if it fits your schedule better (it will be crowded as most of the student body will be there). Please come and enjoy.
Safety Alert
Last week, a girl from TRP was walking near Hillside and Mission. A vehicle drove up behind her and two men tried to get her in the car. She got away and went to school and the police were called. The girl is okay. However, this is a good time to talk to your children about safety. Please remind them about not talking to strangers, not going over to a stranger’s car or house. They should always walk with a group, in well-traveled areas. Stay away from isolated streets and abandoned buildings, and to yell and scream “help” if they feel unsafe.
Head Lice
In recent days we have started to see a few cases of head lice among the students. Please check your child’s hair frequently. If you find lice make sure they are treated and lice free before sending them back to school. Also, please notify the school so we
can send notices. Thank you.

English Language Learners Test Results
When you registered your child for school, you had to complete the Home Language Survey form. If any of the first three questions had another language besides English, your child was automatically designated an English Language Learner. Every year English Language Learners have their English proficiency tested. Today, you will receive the results of those tests.

In order to register your child you will need his/her birth certificate, the most recent shot records and proof of your address. If you have friends or neighbors with a child that age please pass the word on. If you have any questions please call the office at (650) 991-1239.
Rainy Days
With the prospect of more bad weather on the way I would like to just remind parents of a few rainy day procedures. The morning intake and afternoon dismissal procedures are the same as on a non rainy day except that the children are picked up in the multi-use room in the morning. They are still dismissed to either Price St. or Guadalupe. DO NOT go to the classroom to pick up your child. It causes congestion in the hallways and confusion for the students. Kindergarten students will still be dismissed at Guadalupe. Please allow a few extra minutes in the morning and be on time to pick up in the afternoon. The safety of the children is our priority and we ask that it be yours also. If you come into the parking lot be aware that there are children all around and they may not see you.

Happy New Year
We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our families a Happy and healthy New Year. This is a good time to reinforce the importance of school with your child. Remind your child to get to school on time, do all of the assigned homework, return all forms and papers to the teacher and to come to school prepared. Thank you again for giving all of us at JFK the opportunity to work with such wonderful children
Student Council Elections
Politics was alive and well at JFK before the Winter Break! We had our elections for the offices of president, vice president, and secretary. All candidates did an outstanding job. They had to win the primary in their classrooms. They had to make and display posters. They had to write and give a speech. We are proud of all the candidates:
Secretary Vice President President
Marchelle Anonuevo Kyla Apellanes *Alexis Giron

Candy and Cakes
Many classes made “Gingerbread Houses” before the winter vacation. At that time, we were asking for donations of candy for decorations. Just a reminder that we don’t allow items containing lots of sugar as a rule per federal regulations (cupcakes, cakes, candy,). So for class parties, please continue with bottles of water, pizza, cheese and crackers, fruit or non food items like pencils, erasers, tattoos, stickers, … Before bringing any party item to school please check with the teacher.
Gum
Gum is not allowed at school. It was becoming a problem before the vacation. We are hoping to stop it for 2010.
Science Fair
The Jefferson School District Science Fair is Saturday, January 23, 2010. However, the John F. Kennedy Science Fair will be on Friday, January 22nd. Students will be doing either class projects or group projects or individual projects. If you did a science project at home, please return it to school by January 22nd.
Mobility Surveys
In your Wednesday envelope you will find a Mobility Survey. These forms are necessary to project class sizes for next year. Please complete the forms and return them to school immediately. If you need a form in Spanish, Tagalog, or Chinese please ask the teacher or the office. Please read the form carefully and answer the questions as accurately as possible. Thank you for your cooperation.
Kindergarten Registration
Kindergarten Registration is coming up for the 2010-2011 school year. The date has not been finalized and the paperwork has not arrived yet, please keep an eye on the Wednesday Words for further information. If you have friends or neighbors whose child was born on or before December 2, 2005 please keep them informed.

November 25, 2009 Thanksgiving Vacation November 26 & 27
Due to the Thanksgiving Vacation, we are only sending the papers and not the Wednesday Day Envelope. Happy Thanksgiving!
At this time, I would like to say thank you for sharing your children with us. They are wonderful children. I also want to thank the excellent staff at JFK for taking such good care of them academically and emotionally.
How to Cook a Thanksgiving Turkey (Recipe from a Kindergarten Student) *Go to the shop and buy it. Cook it in the kitchen for 100hours. The oven should be hot so it burns your finger. Chop it to pieces. Eat it.
Gardening Day The Green Team would like to thank all the parents, students, teachers and staff who attended Garden Day. It was a great day of hard work and fun. The children love the gardens and it was great to see everyone working together toward a more beautiful and productive school. Parent Volunteers The staff and students here at JFK would like to thank all of our wonderful parent volunteers. Your help in the classrooms and elsewhere is truly appreciated by all. Volunteering in your child’s school is a great way to share in the educational life of your child.
Parent Conferences Thank you to all the parents and guardians that met with the teachers last week. It is so valuable to be able to sit and talk about successes and concerns. So many parents came – very appreciated! I would also like to thank the teachers for the work they did to prepare for conferences and the work they have done with the children. Lastly, thanks to the office staff who had sooooo many phone calls about conference times and minimum days. Things went pretty smoothly due to everyone’s patience and hard work!
QSP Fundraiser Fundraiser items were sent home last Friday. If you ordered things on time and have not received them, please call our office. If there is a problem with your order, please call the 800 number on the paper in your bag. Thanks again for your efforts in raising funds for the school.

Rainy Day Information
Rainy days are very difficult at any school. John F. Kennedy has the added difficulty of our poor accessibility for drop off and pick up. Even if it rains, the parking lot is closed (except for staff) between 8:00AM and 8:20. The campus is closed until 8:15AM because staff supervision does not start until 8:15AM (this includes the multi-use room). At dismissal, the parking lot is again closed between 2:45PM and 3:10PM. We have all the children in ASES go to the multi-use room, all the children who dismiss at Price Street line up in the hallway of rooms 1 – 6 and all the children who dismiss at Guadalupe line up in the hallway of rooms 7 – 12 before we take them to Price St. or Guadalupe. Please do not come into the hallways as it gets too crowded and confusing. Please help us keep the children safe by cooperating with the school systems.
