Back to School Night

Wow!  What a crowd!  Thank you to everyone who came to Back to School Night.  Just a reminder to return the volunteer forms.  We are excited to have you at school.

QSP Catalogue Fundraiser

Last Wednesday you received the QSP Catalogue information.  Please sell, sell, sell!  This is our biggest fundraiser.  Your support is very important.  As soon as your child sells one item, send back the Daily Drawing Coupon (pink paper).  We will pick one name a day for ten days for a prize!  All checks should be made to JFK PTA and your child’s name and room number on the memo line of any check.  Sales end on October 15th.  Thanks!

School Picture Day

Thursday, October 15, 2009

Today you will receive picture information for Picture Day (pink half sheets).  Please review the information so you can decide if you want pictures or which picture packet you want.  You should choose your packet and enclose payment in your order envelope.  The office does not provide change.  We like to see the children in their uniforms for the Fall pictures.  They can wear free dress for the Spring pictures. Make sure your child is on time on Picture Day so he/she does not miss the class picture.

Daly City’s Public Forum

Come discuss Community Values to help identify budget priorities for the City Council (see flyer on back of Wed. Words)

Free and Reduced Lunch Applications

If you have not submitted a free and reduced lunch application for the current year, please do so.  The grace period for submitting the application is October 6, 2009. After that date your status from last year will expire and your status will become Full Price.

JSD Stringed Instrument Music Program

Space is still available in the JSD Stringed Instrument Music Program.  Students in grades 3 through 8 are eligible.  The cost is $300.00 for the entire year and instruments are free of charge.  For further informationplease call Pat Bohm at Daly City Partnership (650) 991-5715 or e-mail to pbohm@dalycity.org.

Borrowed Clothes

Potty accidents and spills are a daily occurrence at elementary schools.  If your child goes home with clothes on that he/she didn’t wear to school please wash the clothes he/she is wearing and return them to school.  We have a limited amount of spare clothes in the office. We do not like to interrupt a parent’s work day to have them come with a change for their child so please return the laundered clothes as soon as possible.

And students in grades 1 – 5 will be dismissed at 3:00PM.
Kindergarten dismissal time is always 12:25

Kindergarten Orientation
Tuesday, August 25, 2009 @ 2:00 pm
Multi Use Room

Opening Day Packet
You will be receiving a folder on the first day of school with very important forms to be completed and returned. Please look for this folder on your child’s first day and return the forms as soon as possible. Included in the opening day packet is your child’s emergency form. Please remember that this is our link to you in case of an emergency at school. Make sure the form is filled out neatly, accurately and completely. Be sure that any numbers you list are current and that there is at least one contact person available at all times. Also, pay attention to the section on the back of the form that asks for Health Information. Please list any health conditions that your child has and any medication that he/she might require at school. If your child requires meds at school there is an additional form that must be filled out, please inquire at the office. Please take the time to fill out the form neatly and completely.

Also included in the packet is a free and reduced lunch application. If you qualified for free or reduced lunch last year your status will remain the same for about 3 weeks after which time your new application will have been processed and your status may or may not have changed. The cost of a school lunch is $2.75. It takes approximately 2 weeks at the beginning of the year to process the lunch applications so the sooner you return your completed application the sooner you will receive status notification.
Drop off and Pick up Area
Please use the Guadalupe Gate for CAR Drop off and Pick Up. Price Street should be used for walkers only.
All Kindergarten students leaving at 12:25 will be dismissed to Guadalupe Canyon Parkway.
The Price St. parking lots (JFK & Second Home) are reserved for staff access between the hours of 7:45am and 8:30am and again between 11:25am and 1:00pm and lastly, 30 minutes prior to dismissal. If you park there, you may have to wait to exit.

Please Note:
**8:15AM is drop off time – No supervision is provided before this time. No one may be on the yard before this time. This is an important safety issue.
**Students must be picked up on time at dismissal unless they are enrolled in an after school program
Class Lists
Class lists will be posted on Tuesday afternoon, August 25th. If you have questions or concerns about your child’s placement please fill out a parent concern form in the office.  Forms will be reviewed and every effort will be made to accommodate. But, please be aware that there are many factors to consider when making class lists and it is not always possible to assign every student to his/her favorite teacher.  All lists are are 98% final. Class movement may be made after school starts depending on class sizes.
School Supply Wish Lists
We are including a general wish list with this letter. On the first day of school teachers will send home an updated list. Remember, your child is not required to bring any supplies, but if you are shopping please use the teachers “wish list” as a guideline. We would love if each family could bring a large box of Kleenex and if possible, copy paper. (Don’t forget when you are doing your back to school shopping to purchase supplies for your child’s study area at home. (i.e. pencils, crayons, glue, scissors...) Remember, in order to get good results, it is important to have the right tools.
Snacks
Snacks are optional for students in grades 1-5. However, if you do send snack it must be a healthy snack. We do not allow chips, soda, sweets (i.e. cookies or candy) or fast food. We encourage fruit, water, crackers, small sandwich or half a sandwich. Thank you for your cooperation. Kindergarten students should bring a healthy snack every day. Pre-K students have a very short day so a healthy snack is optional. If you are bringing treats for your child’s birthday or any occasion you must notify the teacher in advance and they must be healthy treats.
Uniforms
JFK has a uniform policy. Students are requested to wear navy blue pants, skirts, skorts, or jumpers, white shirt, and navy blue or green sweaters or sweatshirts. We have Dragon sweatshirts and T-shirts on sale in the office.  Sweatshirts are $20.00 and t-shirts are $10.00. If you buy both you get them for $25.00. This year we would like to get the support of all of our parents in encouraging all the children to wear uniforms. Uniforms can be purchased in most of the department stores or at Simply Uniforms on El Camino Real.
Attendance
Good attendance is an integral part of your child’s success at school. That means not only being at school daily but being there on time. When students arrive to school late, they miss the very important morning routine of lining up with their classmates, doing the pledge and hearing any announcements that the principal might have. Being tardy creates a chaotic start to the day and disrupts the other students and often interrupts the teacher’s instruction. Prepare your student the evening before school by packing his/her backpack and laying out his/her uniform for the next day. Train your child that punctuality is a quality that will help them be successful in life. If your child is ill please call our absence hotline at (650) 746-2596.
If your child is going to be absent on the first day of school, please notify the office beforehand. The district mandates that any child who is not present or has not called in sick be dropped from the class roster to allow for students who are on the waiting list to be enrolled.
ASES and Daycare
Both ASES and Daycare will be available on the first day of school. If you have not registered your child for Daycare, forms will be available in August. ASES is a free afterschool program from 3:00PM – 6:00PM.
The program is paid for through a grant so there are criteria that must be met for acceptance. Initial applications were processed in June. All new applicants must submit a form and wait for acceptance.

Thank you,
Carolyn Casey, Principal

Congratulations!!!

Friday is the last day of the 2008-2009 school year.  Congratulations to the students and the staff for a successful school year.  Summer vacation is finally here and hopefully everyone enjoys a safe and happy one. But, don’t forget to continue to read with your child, practice math facts, explore the area and enjoy your child.  For activities in the area you can call Daly City Parks and Recreation (650) 991-8001 and register your child. Remeber also that we have Recommended Reading lists in the office

5th Grade Clap Out

Friday, at 10:30 we will cheer our 5th graders off to sixth grade.  If you are planning to attend the Clap Out you may take your child home immediately following.  If you have other children at the school and you wish to take them too please send a note to your child’s teacher.

Budget Concerns

Due to the uncertainty of the budget, we need to let you know that we may have split grade classrooms next school year.  We have been successful with these types of classes and will carefully plan for them (if needed).

Lost and Found

Please check the lost and found in the MUR for any missing items belonging to your child(ren).  Any items of clothing left after the last day of school will be donated to charity.

WE Appreciate YOU

The JFK staff would like to thank the wonderful JFK families who have supported our school all year.  Thanks for your fundraising, donations, help in the classrooms and on field trips.  Thank you for helping your child with their homework, reading the Wednesday Words and returning the signed envelope each week.  Your efforts make our jobs easier.  The children have thoroughly enjoyed the end of the year activities, many of which would not have been possible without the support of our wonderful families.

School starts on August 26 – Minimum Day

School will start again on August 26.  It is a minimum day.  We are putting a wish list on the back of this newsletter so that if you with you can take advantage of the summer sales.  Remember, you are not required to provide supplies, but during this time of budget cuts we certainly appreciate anything that you can supply. If your child is in Kindergarten or 1st grade and you have not already turned in his/her medical and dental forms, please do it before the 1st day of school.  The office will re-open on Monday, 17.  If you have friends or neighbors in our boundary area who are not registered for school please remind them to enroll their children.

End of the Year Activities

Towards the end of the school year there are a lot of activities for the children. Please check backpacks and Wednesday folders for information regarding field trips, and other end of the year activities. Remember that participation in these events is based on good behavior and completed assignments.

Reading Week and Library Cards
JFK celebrates reading week from May 12 – 16!   Our goal is for every child to have a library card. Today we are sending home library card applications. Please complete the form and return it to your local library. Next week, every child who brings a card to school will get a prize! The Daly City Libraries are great!! The children’s librarians are wonderful. The libraries offer many services besides free books. Please visit your local library!
Field Trips
This is the time of year that many field trips are scheduled. Please note: parents and grandparents may help if needed by completing a form in the office. However, friends, aunts, uncles, older brothers or sisters cannot volunteer unless they have a negative TB test and have had their finger prints approved. We recently had an uncle come for the father of a child. It was nice that the family wanted to provide a substitute but district policy won’t allow it. Thanks!
Reminder: We want all students to attend field trips, we consider it part of the learning process. However, students who display unsafe behavior at school or who have unfinished work may not be able to attend the field trips.
Reclassification
We will soon begin the reclassification process. Although we don’t promise to honor requests, we are interested in your thoughts. It is especially helpful if your child and another child do better when separated (i.e. it good to separate cousins). Please come to the office to complete the form. All forms are due by May 14th.
Poetry Contest
The Student Council is sponsoring a poetry contest.   Poems must be original student work. We extended the final due date to tomorrow, May 8th. Selected poems will be read at our Volunteer Appreciation Night on June 2nd.
STAR Testing
STAR testing continues through next week. Thanks to all the parents who have made a special effort to get their children to school on time and schedule appointments for after testing time. Please keep up the good work, it is worth the effrort. Remember the Recipe for Success:
·        Exercise
·        A Good Night’s Sleep
·        A Healthy Breakfast

STAR Testing
STAR testing has begun. Students in grades 2, 3, 4, and 5 will be testing for the next three weeks. It is important that you help your child be prepared for these important State exams. You can help your child by making sure they get a good night’s sleep, eat a good breakfast and get some exercise in the afternoon. Testing starts first thing every morning so it is important that the children get to school on time. Tardy students will not be allowed to go to their class rooms until the testing is over and will have to make up the test that they missed. Thank you for your cooperation, together we can make this testing period a positive and successful experience.
