Dear Kindergarten Families,

It is a pleasure to welcome you to MarjorieHelenTobiasElementary School! I hope all of you have had a relaxing summer and are just as excited about the new year as I am! Our instructional staff is very much looking forward to developing a partnership with your family as we plan for a wonderful kindergarten class with your child in the fall.

As a father of a 3 ½ year old boy, I am all too aware of the butterflies in the tummy; the excitement in the household; and the fears regarding beginning school for the first time! The first year of a child’s education is a most impressionable one. What they see, what they hear, how they communicate with peers and staff, how they approach problem solving and oh yes….tackling curriculum along the way. It is ride to remember and to cherish for both child and parent.

As stated in the welcome letter to all parents, Norma Labrador, Kindergarten teacher in room 2, has recently retired. She has served the community for 33 years and has certainly deserved this moment. She has been a caring teacher for her students and will be missed. We all wish her well in her next adventures. In her place we have hired Betty Lew. Among the many talented candidates vying for the position, she clearly made the right impression. She brings several years of primary teaching experience, a calm nature, organization and an instructional philosophy that matches that of our colleagues. We are excited about her potential and are eager to pull her into our wings.

Please keep in mind that Kindergarten is an important developmental time in your child’s life. Obstacles will be encountered and negotiated with on a daily basis. This is important to remember when information from your child, teacher or me comes home regarding events of the day. New rules are taught while boundaries are tested again and again. This is a normal process at this age and indeed expected by our staff. Our job is to assist in shaping your child’s academic frame and social norms along the way. Although our three Kindergarten teachers are fully credentialed, highly qualified and bring many years of teaching experience into the classroom, they alone can not build your child. It is instrumental to the learning process that a relationship between you and the teacher be constructed immediately. Communication is essential and that process begins at the Kindergarten orientation!

On Tuesday, August 26th at 3:00 p.m. in the Multi Use room, our annual Tobias kindergarten orientation will be held. Please plan on attending. There will be someone there from PTA to take membership enrollments for the fall and you will meet our three superb kindergarten instructors. I will speak briefly regarding general site information before giving way to the teachers and P.T.A.

If you have any concerns or questions, please call our school secretary, Jocelyn Arcilla. If you wish to reach me, please leave your name and number with Jocelyn and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Best Regards,

Will Anderson,
