ABOUT US
Thomas Edison is a K-5 school located 10 miles south of San Francisco near the coast and at the most northern tip of San Mateo County. The 8.4 acres of campus is the energetic glow found under a blanket of fog. Built in 1960, it is one of eleven elementary schools in the Jefferson Elementary School District. Being one of the largest elementary schools in the district, ten languages are spoken amongst our student population of 460. Our staff of 22 highly qualified credentialed teachers, classified staff and parent community; collaboratively provide a balanced education to each and every Thomas Edison Tiger.
Thomas Edison (T.E.) is known for its family-like atmosphere. The average amount of years a T.E. teacher has taught on site is 13. Many of our teachers have educated an entire family of children allowing parents to have an automatic connection with teachers and staff. Our turn over of certificated and classified staff is very minimal. Our diversity of gender and ethnicity on staff make TE a remarkable place to be. Thomas Edison’s diversity is also apparent in our students. 44% of our students are Filipino, 22% are Asian, 9% Hispanic, 7% white, 5% African American, and 2% Pacific Islander. 41% of our students are on free and reduced lunch. We pride ourselves on our diverse cultures and ability to learn from one another to create a balanced view of society.
Along with the support of our PTO, Thomas Edison has been able to hold our students to high academic standards, while fostering the love of learning in each student. The Jefferson School District adopted the California State Standards in 2004, which led to Thomas Edison being one of three schools in the district who designed the standards based report card currently used by the Jefferson School District. Students are recognized for their efforts throughout the year. Every trimester a group of students are highlighted for making remarkable progress in their studies. At the conclusion of the year students who have met their grade level standards are awarded with a R.OA.R. Award (Reaching Outstanding Academic Results). Teachers participate in on going professional development through out the year to ensure their practicing strategies are the most current and beneficial for their students. To ensure a well-balanced education Thomas Edison offers may extra curricular activities including Academic Chess, ELL support, Park and Recreation, Homework Center, Reading Clubs, Safety Patrol, and Student Council.
With the fog hugging us on a daily basis, our community, parents and staff are able to huddle together to create a warm, positive, safe environment for all students to become life long learners, positive citizens and creative problem solvers.
