Dear Students and Families,

Welcome to the Room 23 Blog page. You'll be glad to know that the 1st Trimester Conference and Report Card period is over.  Thank you one and all, very much, for giving up your time and meeting with me.  I hope there were no big surprises.  It has been a great 1st Trimester and we all deserve a break.  I hope that you enjoy your days off as they are very well deserved.

How We Did This Trimester

The students of Room 23 are a fabulous class, very hardworking and committed to achieving excellence.  Although our benchmark testing was a little lower than expected we did well.  We are as little bit below target for this period but, rest assured, with the students' hard work we will get there.

Room 23 students spent their 1st Trimester of science in Room 22 with Ms. Fisher.  It was a great experience for all of us.  While Room 23 students were in Room 22, Room 24 students visited me for science.  We had a great time and I am sorry to see them leave.

What Our Next Trimester Holds for Us

Room 23 students will be headed over to Ms. Burnham in Room 24 for a trimester in Life Science.  This should be very exciting.  I know that they're looking forward to this very much.

In Math we began working with fractions right before the break.  Although the students have had some introduction to fractions in 4th grade, 5th grade math takes fractions a big step farther.  We will be adding and subtracting fractions which requires a common denominator.  Please make sure that your student is practicing his/her multiplication tables and remember - Fractions ARE Division!!

Language Arts sees us starting Unit 3 in the Pearson Reading Street series.  The unit will end sometime in January.

January will also see us taking more benchmark examinations in Pearson and Curriculum Associates.  It is imperative that your student be:

  1. Reading every night for a minimum of fifteen minutes (30 minutes would be better).
  2. Practicing their multiplication and division tables.  Flash cards work best for this and can be easily made or purchased.
  3. Keeping up to date on his/her homework especially Science
In Conclusion

Thank you very much for all of your help and support.  Remember the Annual 5th grade play will be starting in January.  Please let me know if you can volunteer your time and/or efforts.  This is an event that the students look forward to each year.
