ImageBuilding a Safe and Inclusive Space for All: Anti-Bullying Efforts at JESD

At Jefferson Elementary School District (JESD), we believe every student deserves to feel welcomed, engaged, and safe. Our District is dedicated to cultivating vibrant and inclusive school communities where all students feel valued, respected, and supported. In these communities, students can build positive relationships, develop a strong sense of belonging, and reach their full potential.

Focus on Prevention:

  • PBIS in Action: Our schools utilize School-Wide Positive Behavior Implementation Systems (PBIS). This proactive approach focuses on creating a positive learning environment with clear expectations and celebrates good choices. We believe in teaching and supporting students in developing essential social-emotional skills like conflict resolution, responsible decision-making, and empathy.
  • Social-Emotional Learning: We equip students with essential social-emotional skills through age-appropriate activities. They learn to manage emotions, make good decisions, and develop empathy for others. These skills are crucial for preventing bullying and creating a culture of respect.
  • Restorative Practices: JESD utilizes restorative practices to address conflicts constructively. These practices focus on repairing harm, rebuilding trust, and understanding the impact of actions.

Creating a Safe and Supportive Environment:

  • Clear Expectations: PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports) is a district-wide program that establishes clear expectations for behavior and provides positive reinforcement for following them. This helps create a predictable and supportive environment for all students.
  • Conflict Resolution Skills: We equip students with the tools to resolve conflicts peacefully. By learning to communicate effectively and manage their emotions, students can avoid situations that may escalate into bullying.
  • Zero Tolerance for Bullying: Bullying, harassment, and intimidation have no place in our schools. We have clear policies and procedures in place to address bullying incidents promptly and ensure student safety.

Bullying Defined:

Recognizing bullying behavior, to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include:

  • An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power—such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people.

  • Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once.”

Empowering Students and Staff:

  • Speak Up & Bystander Intervention: We encourage and teach students to report any concerns about bullying to a trusted adult. We offer multiple reporting options, making it easy for students to seek help without fear of retaliation. We also teach students how to be upstanders and support classmates who may be experiencing bullying. By intervening or reporting the situation, students can create a culture of kindness and inclusivity.
  • Safe Reporting & Support Services: We have clear procedures in place for addressing bullying incidents promptly. There are multiple ways students can report bullying, ensuring everyone feels comfortable coming forward. Additionally, we offer ongoing support services for students who have been impacted by bullying.

Everyone has a role to play in creating a safe and inclusive school environment.  JESD staff are trained to intervene immediately if they witness bullying, harassment, or discrimination. We encourage everyone in our school community – students, staff, parents, and volunteers – to treat each other with respect and kindness.

Together, we can create a school environment where all students feel safe, respected, and empowered to learn and grow!
