The Importance of Attendance

Students do best in school when they attend regularly. Did you know that missing just 10% of the school year in the early grades can leave many students struggling throughout elementary school? Or that by 6th grade, missing that much school is strongly liked to course failure and even eventually dropping out of high school?

Every school day counts and everyone can make a difference: educators, afterschool programs, parents, and students.

School Hours

Woodrow Wilson Elementary School starts promptly at 8:30 am. Students are expected to line up in the kindergarten or main yard and be ready to enter their classrooms when the first bell rings at 8:27 am. Kindergarten and transitional kindergarten classes end at 1:45 pm, while all other grades end at 3:00 pm.

Tardiness

The most crucial learning hours of a school day are the morning hours, because they are when students are most attentive. Students who are tardy miss the beginning of their morning classes, they are behind, and they also cause a distraction for other students when they arrive late to class.

If your student arrives after the second bell rings at 8:30 am, he/she will need to go to the school office to get a tardy slip.

Absence

It is important that your child is at school learning whenever possible. Additionally, our school loses money from the state of California when your child's absence is unexcused.

If your child is sick and unable to attend school, please call the office at (650) 991-1255 to let the secretary know. Also, please send a signed note with your child upon returning to school with the date and reason for the absence.

Try to schedule regular doctor/dentist appointments outside of school hours. If it must be during the school day, have your child attend school before and/or after the appointment.

For any other pre-planned absence, please discuss with your teacher as early as possible (at least two weeks in advance).
